We are now past that season
of kittens and all that they bring,
past the callow joy, the fuzzy
wonder, the naïve hopefulness, the weak
knees that come with such adoring
adorable neediness
so helpless at our feet.
We are long past the season
of kittens, that absurd furry
sweetness that takes on the world,
the ridiculous faith that makes us believe
that things don’t change, that litters
of kittens actually make families, that mothers
will never reject a hungry child.
